Herringbone and chevron, laid the way it was a century ago.

Pattern gives a room rhythm. We set out every herringbone from the centre line of the space so it meets each doorway square.

Light arrives at the front door and follows the grain into every room. That is what a floor is for.

Our Craft

The part of the floor you never see matters most.

Subfloors levelled. Expansion gaps calculated for the room rather than the rule of thumb. Grain matched board to board. Then the finish.

A Project  ·  The Panelled House

One herringbone, from the front door to the study, without a single threshold.

The brief

A family home with freshly panelled walls in sage and white. The owners wanted a floor with enough character to complement the scheme and run unbroken from the hall into every room.

The challenge

Six doorways off a central hall, and a herringbone pattern that needed to arrive perfectly at every opening.

The solution

Natural engineered oak herringbone, brushed and oiled so the grain reads against the flat paint. We set out from the hall's centre line and dry-laid the first two rows through every opening before committing a single block.

The result

The pattern arrives at each door dead centre. Not one threshold strip interrupts the floor, so the rooms feel connected and considered.

Design Advice

A floor is never one colour. It has a north-facing colour and a south-facing one.

The same natural oak reads cool and grey in a north-facing Victorian front room and honey-warm in a south-facing kitchen extension. That is why we bring samples to your home and leave them for a few days, rather than showing you a board under showroom lights.

Before recommending anything we ask about the light, the dog, the underfloor heating, the kitchen colour and how the room is used.
